Humans are notorious for being pack rats. They get new stuff but they hold on to old stuff. (Ever seen an old unused, dirty car sitting next to a bright shiny new one?)
"Forsaking all others...". We recognize that phrase from traditional marriage vows. That is a statement of total commitment to their spouse and it means that all other interests are abandoned.
Few marriage partners would willingly enter into marriage with a person who remained 'affiliated' with their old love interests.
Since Christ cannot be deceived, He knows whether or not we are sincere when we come to Him.
Unlike multiple sexual relationships and their effect on on marriages, the infidelities that that affect our relationship with Christ are one two bases:
➛ departing from His Word
➛ breaking fellowship with His Spirit
Christ wants our intellectual agreement with Him and our spiritual agreement with Him.
Firstly, this means He cares about what we think. He wants our thoughts to align with His thoughts.
Secondly, He wants us to value the same things as He values.
So True Repentance involves our minds and our hearts. Now, our heart is the intersection of our spirit and soul. Since we become New Spirit beings in the New Birth our spirit is conformed to His Spirit. What is holding us back is our un-renewed minds, the centerpiece of our sous. That is another way of saying we have not "forsaken all others".
Until we have become conformed to the image of Christ there is some degree of separation or imperfection in our relationship with him - totally on our part.
Jesus told us NOT to sew new cloth into an old cloth.
He told us NOT to put new wine into old wineskins.
Judaism is dead. That is what Jesus was saying.
Religion is dead. That is what Jesus was saying.
Paul explained the new 'thing' this way:
He is making the statement that the Kingdom Of Heaven is a relationship with the Holy Spirit Of Christ Jesus and that that relationship is one completely devoid of
➛ condemnation
➛ fear
➛ depression
So, the questions we must ask ourselves to determine if we have gone through True Repentance are:
➛ Do I see myself as righteous?
➛ Am I totally at peace with my Lord and others?
➛ Am I living in joy?
If the answer to any of those questions is no, you need to surrender whatever the source of the negativity is to Christ Jesus and allow Him to purify your heart in that area.
