Adonijah was the fourth of David's sons but was the oldest living son at the time of David's death. He attempted to take the throne but was denied it when Solomon rose to power.
Solomon ordered his execution after Adonijah made a second, indirect attempt to seize power by asking to marry David's concubine, Abishag.
